The USGS has initiated the Amphibian Research and Monitoring Initiative (ARMI) in response to concern over worldwide indications of amphibian declines. Program goals are to assess and monitor the status of amphibians across the U.S., investigate the causes of declines, and provide scientific information to researchers, land managers, and policymakers to halt or reverse declines. A multidisciplinary, multiagency approach is being taken to address these goals. Amphibian research is being pursued at local, regional and national scales, and considerable effort is underway to develop methods for linking research across scales. The USGS National Mapping Discipline is participating in this Program by providing expertise in geospatial analysis and environmental modeling, remote sensing technology and data interpretation, and visualization techniques. Working closely with herpetologists, our goal is to improve the state of knowledge about amphibian-environment relationships. |
