Night Sounds and Bright Eggs: SoCal's Amphibian Spring Fling!
Amphibians in Southern California are bursting into action as they congregate to their breeding areas, where you can spot glistening eggs and hear their enchanting calls! These remarkable creatures occupy a dazzling array of habitats across the region. Along the picturesque coast, listen for the melodic sounds of Pacific chorus frogs and western toads; in the majestic mountains, discover the elusive mountain yellow-legged frogs, Ensatina, and California chorus frogs; and venture into the deserts to encounter the spirited red-spotted toads and desert slender salamanders. With over 70 species of amphibians calling California home, the excitement is palpable!
This time of year, dedicated biologists from the USGS Western Ecological Research Center (WERC) are on the front lines, surveying the landscape for signs of amphibian activity during both day and night. Their efforts are especially focused on several conservation-concern species like the federally listed mountain yellow-legged frog, California red-legged frog, arroyo toad, and desert slender salamander, along with five additional California Species of Special Concern.
To celebrate Amphibian Week 2025, USGS biologists will be hosting an amphibian informational booth at the Santa Ana Zoo on Friday, 05/09/2025. Visit and immerse yourself in the fascinating world of amphibian research! Engage in hands-on activities and learn about the vital studies being conducted right here in Southern California. Santa Ana Zoo is a fantastic venue, partnering with WERC biologists in the mountain yellow-legged frog captive breeding program, where you can see conservation in action! Don’t miss out on this thrilling opportunity to connect with nature and support amphibian conservation!
