Amphibian Week was started in 2020 by the Partners in Amphibian and Reptile Conservation (PARC) and partners as a way to increase awareness about amphibians and their habitats and a celebration of all things amphibian.
It is celebrated annually the first full week of May.

ARMI's role

The U.S. Geological Survey's Amphibian Research and Monitoring Initiative (ARMI) provides essential scientific information to managers to help arrest or reverse amphibian population declines across the United States. Since the inception of Amphibian Week in 2020, ARMI has been a key partner in Amphibian Week's effort to educate communities about amphibian conservation and the vital role these animals play in our ecosystems. During Amphibian Week ARMI focuses on outreach activities to provide information to state and federal entities and to the general public through coordinated events in the Nation's capital and at local events in each ARMI region.

Phil the Frog

Phil the Frog is a USGS/ARMI phenomenon who embodies the spirit of amphibian conservation based on sound science. Phil was named after Dr. Phil Bishop of the University of Otago, New Zealand because he was a great herpetologist and champion of amphibians.

Fun fact, Phil is also the Senior Liaison to Inter-amphibian Monitoring and Engagement (SLIME), previously called Liaison for Ecosystems Amphibian Programs and Science (LEAPS).
